In January 2020, Wendy Conklin enlisted her neighbor to help her build a greenhouse. “I’ve wanted a greenhouse for years, and I finally decided to do it,” Wendy declares. She purchased old windows from Craigslist, repaired them, and laid them on the ground to determine how big the greenhouse could be.
Aside from the frame, some metal, and the outdoor light fixtures, the structure showcases reclaimed, antique materials that Wendy had been saving for a special project, such as the bricks, weathervane, and Victorian shingles.
Although it took six months to complete, Wendy knows it was worth the wait. Now, she can better protect her plants. “It’s been super fun, and I’ve really enjoyed having it,” she concludes.
Wendy spends more time in her greenhouse than the average plant lover, as she also uses the space for photo shoots for her business called Chair Whimsy. In 2012, after taking upholstery courses, she started making custom chairs out of colorful fabrics and whatever chair frames she could find.
Soon after, she wondered if her hobby could turn into something more. For several years, she balanced her blossoming business with her work as an educational consultant. However, now, her creative passion is her full-time gig, and she’s loving every minute of it.
