Set sail on a sea of style with a nautical-themed gallery wall!
If you’re looking to create a unique and eye-catching space in your home, consider incorporating a nautical themed gallery wall into your decor. This classic design style is a great way to add some character and charm to your space, whether you live by the ocean or not.
“The idea behind this gallery was to create a strong focal point as you walk into our home,” says Lindsay Lewis of @grandmillennialmama. “It’s a great conversation starter.”
To style a nautical-themed gallery, start by selecting a mix of frames in different sizes and shapes. Look for frames with a weathered or distressed finish to give them an authentic, vintage look. “Many of the frames I hand-painted to give the wall a little more flair,” Lindsay says.
Next, choose your artwork. Look for pieces that feature images of ships, anchors, lighthouses, sea creatures, or other nautical motifs. You can mix and match different styles and mediums, such as prints, photographs, paintings, and even three-dimensional objects like seashells or driftwood. “I began collecting art during the pandemic from all over, including Facebook Marketplace, Etsy, eBay as well as a few from Wayfair,” Lindsay says. “Several of these pieces were gifted to me from friends and family, and those will always mean the most.”
When it comes to arranging your collage, you can start by laying out all your pieces on the floor to get a sense of the overall composition and play around with different configurations until you find one that feels balanced and visually pleasing. “You should include many different sizes and shapes of frames as well as both vertical and horizontal pieces,” Lindsay says. For the free-spirited, like Lindsay, you can also take a different approach. “For this large of a wall, I prefer hanging as I go. This wall was a bit like Tetris!”
For a cohesive look, try to keep your spacing consistent between frames. You can also create some visual interest by staggering the heights of your frames or grouping similar pieces together.
