The powder room gets a modern-folklore interpretation at our Utah Project House.
We’ve been waiting in anticipation for the first finished space to reveal from our Utah Project House, and here it is: the powder room! This powder room is part of a larger mudroom in the house designed by builder The Fox Group.
Whereas other areas of the home feel rather stately, the powder room is full of homespun charm. “This powder room has a primitive, historical, farmhouse feel,” says Cara Fox, owner of The Fox Group. “We went in this direction because it’s perfect for a cottage-farmhouse mudroom, which needs to be more durable as it’s a high-traffic space.”
Rustic Romance
Cara chose elements of nature and warmth in this room, starting with a custom vanity. “The inspiration for this came from the wallpaper,” she says. A local cabinet maker engraved wheat details onto the vanity to add a charming folk-art feel. “Artwork also highlights the motifs,” she adds. “We opted for a painting of a horse and a barn to highlight the farmhouse visual.”
Reddish-brown brick floors in a herringbone pattern also give a nod to early American folklorist design. “Brick has been used for centuries and is seen all over America,” Cara says. “It’s a lovely choice for a farmhouse mudroom as it’s durable and can handle wear and tear or the elements.” Adding sophistication to the walls, the baseboards, door casing and crown molding by Woodgrain create another level of polish to enhance the quaint coziness of the room.
Fine Finishes
With the cottage-farmhouse folklore aesthetic at play, Cara chose brass finishes for depth and contrast. “The style of the faucet reminds us of a farm’s water spigot in its shape, but we’re doing it in an unlacquered brass for some unexpected shine,” Cara says. Sconces hearken to farmhouse style with a candle design while the bathroom’s hardware by Emtek and doorknob by Schaub and Company are also in unlacquered brass. “Though we aren’t against mixing finishes from time to time, we thought this small space called for the warmth and subtlety of unlacquered brass. We love how it interplays with the wallpaper,” Cara explains.
With its folklore-farmhouse style along with cottage details and stunning elements, this powder room is memorable and elegant as it nostalgically pulls on the heartstrings with primitive touches.
