Holiday USE THE GOOD OLD-FASHIONED PRINCIPLE OF “WASTE NOT, WANT NOT” TO SHOWCASE AND UPCYCLE BEAUTIFUL OLD GLASS AND VINTAGE SILVER TO SET THE SCENE FOR A VERY SPECIAL CELEBRATION. ANUPCYCLED HolidayWelcome WRITTEN BY Robyn Alexander STYLED AND PHOTOGRAPHED BY Micky Hoyle/Bureaux 8 HOLIDAYdécor | 2022

What does your favorite Christmas tree decoration look like? So many of us take down a timeworn tinsel star or the special glass baubles that have been loved since childhood off the tree after the celebrations are complete, and carefully store them for use again next year. Inspired by this old-school, sentimental take on Christmas, why not use all sorts of upcycled elements – think old silver gravy boats, handmade cards and tree decorations artfully fashioned from junkshop light fittings – to set the scene for your festivities this year? Using warm golden tones makes this palette one that could easily transition from Thanksgiving to Christmas festivities. Here are some great ideas to get you started. Rounding Off. Craft upcycled wreaths by using junkyard industrial parts (think old wheel rims with the spokes removed, for example) wrapped with exible, leafy twigs. To t the color scheme here, locate a tree with leaves in rich shades of yellow, orange or red. Simply wind and bind the twigs around the circle shape, xing the ends with a hidden piece of wire. Add some vintage tree decorations and nish with a bell-shaped piece of glass from an old light tting, then simply hang in place. OPPOSITE • Glow Slow. Enchantingly rustic, this inviting Christmas table combines organic charm with an industrial edge. Combining rich tones of amber and ochre with sparkling glassware interspersed with the gleam of heirloom silver makes for a warm and welcoming look. Use an oversized piece of raw linen to clad the table and create a neutral backdrop that also adds tactile appeal.Top this with a mix of sparkling clear glassware and some amber glass pieces, combined with old silver trophies lled with seasonal blooms in coordinating colors. To make the place settings unique, delineate them using a silver tray topped with a charger plate, salt cellar, glassware and linen napkin for each diner.A pair of vintage wooden benches from a secondhand store make the perfect seating option—the simple backrests add an extra dimension of comfort when indulging in a lengthy feast—and don’t forget a side table for the wine bucket. The Champagne, at least, needs to stay on ice! HOLIDAYdécor | 2022 9

All Grown Up. This old castmetal turnstile was found in someone’s garden, which sparked the idea of using a piece of junk to “grow” a tree. Following a bit of modi cation to its shape, it now lives outside during the year and will always be ready to be brought inside during the festive season. Combining the industrial feel of the “tree” with the warm glow created by the sparkling upcycled cut- and cast-glass ornaments creates a memorable and very sophisticated bit of festive juxtaposition. 10 HOLIDAYdécor | 2022

ABOVE LEFT • Circle of Love. To create the ceiling decoration, make a series of upcycled wreaths by using junkyard industrial parts wrapped with exible, leafy twigs. Choose a tree with leaves in rich shades of yellow, orange or red: you’ll need secateurs to snip the leaf sprays, and sharp scissors for ne trimming.Wind and bind the twigs around the circle shapes, xing the ends with a hidden piece of wire, then suspend at different heights from the ceiling, allowing the leaves to hang artfully down.Add vintage glass hanging lamps for overhead illumination. TOP LEFT • In the Mix. The decorations were made from odd retro glass lampshades and are inspired by the antique blown glass decorations popular in Germany. The brass pieces attaching them to the “tree” are chandelier spare parts. At your local market, look out for a brass seller who has boxes of old spare parts from which to assemble antique light ttings, spend some time rummaging and asking for advice, and you will soon be able to “Frankenstein” them together. ABOVE RIGHT • Wrap Stars. Layer multiple shades and textures of paper and natural rafa string for added visual interest. The exquisitely detailed, handmade 3-D tags are like extra gifts in themselves. Look for special gift tags at your local card/gift shop or online. LEFT • Tied Up with String. When it comes to gift wrapping, stick to a palette of brown craft paper with accents of silver, gold and white, and your presents will coordinate perfectly with the tree and its embellishments. HOLIDAYdécor | 2022 11

Sweet Treats. Love the uted decorative style on the lids of those vintage glass decanters? We do too… which is why we used the stoppers to imprint starry shapes on these sugar cookies. We suggest you pop a few decorative glass platefuls about the living room—they will add to the festive look of the space as well as being perfect for impromptu guests or anytime snacking. And if you’re looking for the perfect recipe for simple, buttery biscuits, we heartily recommend Nigella Lawson’s easy (and delicious) Butter Cut-Out Cookies. Originally published in her iconic book How to be a Domestic Goddess (Chatto & Windus), the recipe is also available on her website, nigella.com. Tray Chic. To make each place setting unique, delineate them using an old silver tray topped with a charger plate, salt cellar, glassware and linen napkin for each diner.Thrift stores and ea markets are good sources for vintage glass vases and lampshades, as are online vintage retailers such as eBay and Etsy. Always pick up broken light ttings when you can, as you never know which “good” piece of glass you may need to complete an upcycled element, and retro glass lampshades are easy to nd and inexpensive when bought in pieces. Once you get them home, clean the glass thoroughly but carefully using hot water and window cleaner.

TOP LEFT • Set in Amber. These vintage amber glass vessels add a warm glow to a window nook and will also work beautifully at the center of a Christmas table or as a mantelpiece display. They look their best when grouped in multiples—mix a variety of patterns and sizes to create a look that’s both varied and visually arresting.Amber glass pieces are generally inexpensive and easy to nd at secondhand stores and ea markets, and can also be sourced online via Etsy, eBay, and other web-based vintage dealers. The glass Christmas baubles attached to the carafes are traditional, store-bought pieces, chosen with care to contrast and complement the amber tones of the glassware. RIGHT • Clip Art. Create your own Christmas cards by photographing your existing tree and table decorations then printing them. Send to friends or use them to make a charming wall display such as this one. They will also look lovely strung across a mantelpiece. The beautiful brass pieces used to fasten the cards to the wall-mounted rail here are Victorian letter clips. Hunt them down on eBay or at local antiques markets and stores. TOP RIGHT • Trophy Winner. This plywood “trophy head” of an African antelope was transformed into a reindeer by altering and adding to the antlers using a template found online. Resprayed with gold paint, it’s now a bold Christmas decoration, especially when garlanded with sprays of leaves— and a few additional trophies in the form of silver cups. HOLIDAYdécor | 2022 13

ABOVE RIGHT • Tip Top Table. Decorate the table with a mix of sparkling cut glass and amber glass pieces, combined with old silver trophies lled with seasonal owers in coordinating colors. A unique and quirky touch: homemade candles in vintage silver gravy boats. RIGHT • Shine On. Homemade candles in vintage silver gravy boats are a unique and eyecatching addition to the table—and are bound to be a talking point, too.To make them, use highquality soy wax (add a drop or two of essential oil from r or spruce trees for a delightful Christmas scent) with braided cotton wicks to ll old silver gravy boats and jugs. The silver pieces can be hunted down over time at vintage and thrift shops—and reused or re lled after the celebrations are done— while wax, wicks and essential oils are easy to nd at craft shops and online. BELOW • Say My Name. Rather than using ordinary place cards, create another personalized touch for each guest with a custom-labelled water carafe. Find ornate, multicoloured glassware at junk shops and markets, as well as online at Etsy and eBay.As long as the main colors are coordinated, they will look brilliantly quirky yet work well together, so it’s a good idea to always buy glassware pieces in multiples when you can. 14 HOLIDAYdécor | 2022

Christmas SUSTAINABLE AND MEMORABLE GIFTS FROM LYNCH CREEK FARM WRITTEN, STYLED AND PHOTOGRAPHED BY Kelly McMaster Evergreen 1 16 Holiday Décor | 2022 Trimmings

Would you like to give a gift that is both thoughtful and memorable? One that your loved ones will thoroughly enjoy and be able to share with others as well? Lynch Creek Farm has mastered the art of delighting evergreen enthusiasts year after year with their fresh wreaths, centerpieces and garlands. Our editors had the pleasure of working with a bevy of greenery from the Pacific Northwest farm, and to say we were impressed would be an understatement. Lynch Creek Farm was founded by the Hunter family in 1980 as a hobby farm in Shelton, Washington. In the early days of the farm, the Hunters grew organic vegetables and sold their produce at the Shelton Farmers Market on the weekends. Later, the farm offerings broadened to include flowers and seasonal bouquets. The family also introduced their first evergreen Christmas wreaths, which allowed them to stay at the market through the winter season. 2

The business has steadily grown each year with its excellent service and a plethora of wreath designs, fresh centerpieces and garlands to choose from. Lynch Creek Farm is now operating from a total of 100,000 square feet on 10 acres of land with the help of almost 400 employees and many more support staff. Their team of 20 bow makers hand tie bows all year long to get ready for the next Christmas season. The Christmas wreaths are made with fresh noble fir, juniper berries, incense cedar, variegated holly, salal and ponderosa pinecones, and we can attest to the amazing aroma that lasts for weeks. Weighing in at a hefty 7-8 pounds, each wreath is 26 inches in diameter and fully 3-dimensional. The garland is an incredible 18 feet long and exceeded our expectations. Soft and easy to handle, it worked well in a variety of settings. L LYNCH CREEK SHOPPING LIST THE PIECES SHOWN HERE INCLUDE: 1. THE TRADITIONAL WREATH. At Lynch Creek Farm, the Noble fir trees are never cut down when the boughs are harvested. Instead, the lower branches are trimmed to ensure a lifetime of continued bough production. Their evergreen boughs come mostly from the foothills of the Cascade Mountains, near Mount St. Helens, on either permitted government or private land. There is no harm to the forest through sustainable bough harvesting, and evergreen products naturally biodegrade. Styling with their wreaths, garlands and centerpieces truly is as easy as running the garland down the center of the table, hanging a wreath on the door or in the window and placing one of their many creative centerpieces as the star of the dining or coffee table. The many creative vessels used for centerpieces can be reused and re-purposed, along with the berries and cones that come on convenient picks. Statement-making pieces, they fill a room with the rich colors and heady aromas only nature can provide. Sustainability, prompt delivery and affordable pricing make Lynch Creek Farm a wonderful holiday choice for everyone on your list—including yourself! GOURD-GEOUS HOW ONE MAN CREATED A BUSINESS TURNING VEGETABLES INTO HOME DÉCOR WRITTEN BY Cori Laatsch PHOTOS COURTESY OF Meadowbrooke Gourds Meadowbrooke Gourds is located on a 200-acre farm at the foot of the Blue Mountains near Carlisle, Pennsylvania. Ben Bear, Meadowbrooke’s founder, started growing gourds and sold them as decoration with his produce business. Ben realized that what did not sell would not rot like his other crops. In 1993, Ben started using his carpentry tools to create designs in the gourds. Just two years later, Meadowbrooke Gourds was born with just five employees working out of tractor trailers and a shed. In 1996, the business outgrew that temporary space and moved to the farm outside of Carlisle, PA. There are several events throughout the year that bring in large crowds. Create Your Own is done three times a year, where customers can create their own gourds and dye, burn, paint and accessorize them. In April, the Spring Festival hosts the Annual Gourd Egg Hunt. They hide 2,000 gourd eggs along with 21 prize eggs, and usually around 400 people attend each hunt. They also host a Summer Celebration and Sunflower Festival where they sell at a discounted price the products that didn’t pass quality control. There are also food trucks and art vendors. Holiday TOP, LEFT: Quite a few of the accessories added to the gourds, like the hats, pipes and bowties, are all crafted on site just like the gourds. Snowmen are a popular design choice that are offered every year around Christmas. LEFT: Some gourds have a small hole in the back to place a light bulb. The gourds look great lit up, especially these jack-o’-lanterns, but they are ammable. Flames should not be put in or near any gourds. TOP, RIGHT: Choosing innovative designs at the farm is a daunting task. While the ideas can come from anywhere or anyone, the crew prefers to look at a mockup of each design idea before deciding what to craft. Some designs need a little tweaking to give them that Meadowbrooke look. Décor 20 Holiday Décor | 2022 Artistry

G H HERE IS WHAT THE GROWING PROCESS LOOKS LIKE FOR MEADOWBROOKE GOURDS! • PLANTING. In May, Meadowbrooke Gourds plants seeds in the greenhouse. As seedlings, the gourds are brought outside to harden before planting in the ground. In early June, the gourds are planted in the elds. • POLLINATING. Next, it is time for hand pollinating gourd owers in July. Hand pollinating consists of the farm crew nding male owers and taking a paint brush or cotton swab around the stamen to collect the pollen. Then 2-3 female owers are found, and the pollen is spread inside them. • HARVESTING. The gourds will grow all summer until the rst hard frost. Frost kills the vines, so the farm crew will cut each gourd off the vine and line them up in a row for winter. During the winter, the gourd hardens. The skin will begin to mold and peel off. In spring, each gourd is hand picked and sorted according to size and shape. GROWINGGOURDS HERE IS HOW MEADOWBROOKE GOURDS TURNS THEIR HARVESTED GOURDS INTO BEAUTIFUL DÉCOR PIECES FOR YOUR HOME! • WASHING. Washing is the rst step in the process which consists of getting the old skin and mold off the outside of the gourd. This is where the insides are washed out of any gourd that will be lit. • CRAFTING. In the crafting area, patterns are drawn on the outside of the gourd and cut out.Woodburning is also done at this stage. • FINISHING. Finishing is where all gourds are painted or dyed, and a clear coat is added. All parts and accessories are added to nish the design. • SHIPPING. Each gourd is given a nal quality check before being boxed up and heading to shipping.Any gourd that does not make it through this check gets put into “oops” and sold at a discount. HANDCRAFTING GOURDS BELOW: Each year the designers produce new ideas for gourd designs, but the classics like snowmen and jack-o’-lanterns are offered every year. Other gourd designs like cows, chickens, fruit and birdhouses are offered year-round. Head to their website www.mbgourds.com to see all their products and the event schedule! After over 20 years of growing gourds, Meadowbrook now crafts over 250 kinds of gourds! The crafting team has over 40 years of combined experience, and each craftsman works thousands of hours to master their skill. After the gourds are cut off the vines, they are lined up outside to harden. The reason that the gourds are so good for crafting is due to their hard shells and the fact that they don’t rot. The gourds are planted on mounds of dirt that are covered with black plastic. As the gourds grow throughout the summer, the black plastic attracts more heat for the roots of the gourds. H Halloween-obsessed, growing up horseback riding, and moving to a town with a well-known carriage manufacturing history, Chelsea had been searching for a budget-friendly antique horse carriage and a discontinued horse skeleton replica for four years. She nally found the antique 1800s horse carriage on eBay and as luck would have it, it was in her hometown, less than a 2-hour drive away. Continuing with her exhaustive search through over-priced, far away and not-quite-right horses, to Chelsea’s delight she found one within a short drive from home! The entire setup was kismet and just like that, her vision of “Skeletariat” and his historic haunted carriage ride came to life. Chelsea Smith of @kevrosefarm HOLIDAYdécor | 2022 23

FChristine Vogel of @rusticfeatherstone Fall is Christine’s favorite time of the year. Not only does she ll her home with holiday décor, but she also includes outdoor styling. Chris incorporated the bittersweet vine, which grows wild on the property, into her fall tablescape. It adds the perfect vibrant color of autumn! This space under the trees is ideal for outdoor family gatherings be it a family cookout, or marshmallows and cider at the re pit. Using the rustic table and chandelier that her husband made for her from old utility pole cross arms, she creates a magical oasis. Riggins the pup serves as the perfect greeter! 24 Holiday Décor | 2022

S Self-made stylist and social media in uencer, Toni is an inspiration to thousands as she styles her California home. Using her outdoor spaces as an extension of the indoor space is a necessity for Toni, her husband Bryan and their two young sons. Using the bountiful bougainvillea in their backyard as a backdrop,Toni creates an al fresco dining spot that is as cozy as can be.With piles of pumpkins, oodles of owers, cozy throws and candles to add glow when the sun sets, who would want to be anywhere else? Mickie Johnson of @cottageonmainst A A Christmas tree with a few twinkling lights and ribbons tied to its branches and tucked into a vintage wooden chicken cage added so much vintage cozy charm to Mickie’s living room. She added pops of red and giant jingle bells along with comfy oor pillows to create a scene that might nd Santa slumbering under on Christmas morning. 26 Holiday Décor | 2022

Dana Vrechek of @thestonehouseroad D Dana describes this area as “very much a plopyour-favorite-things-in-a-basket-and-pull-out-a-few-itemskind-of-look.” She tends to keep everything more seasonal rather than holiday focused. As a self-described “lazy holiday decorator” this type of setup works for a family fall soup dinner as easily as a Christmas cookie party. Dana’s favorite vintage scale, a leaf her son brought from the yard, a linen table runner and the sweetest mini crochet stocking banner, layered over a plain garland pull this area together. Dana reminds us to “add height, build texture and always add at least one or two personal items that will make you smile when you walk by... it’s a backdrop for the people you love!” HOLIDAYdécor | 2022 27

Kristy Chaffin @therosecottagerevival V Vintage has always had Kristy’s heart, just like this beautiful historic shed that she’s refurbished to its natural state. Her greatest joy is making family and friends feel welcome through warm touches around her home and that includes her outdoor spaces. Simple greens fashioned into a large wreath, stuffed into sturdy buckets and adorned with classic ribbon and rustic bells make a beautifully festive and elegant statement. 28 Holiday Décor | 2022

Hannah Hathaway of @welivedhappilyeverafter C Christmas is all about cozy, vintage elegance for Hannah. The warm glow of patio lights, paired with a mix of real and faux pine trees from Balsam Hill in aged terracotta pots, makes the space feel like winter.Add a cozy glow with battery-operated candles in lanterns and a pair of boots on the doormat for a completely homey feel. Hannah and her husband did their own “German schmear” on the original red brick for a gorgeous historical look. HOLIDAYdécor | 2022 29

Deeanna Esparza of @deevine.home.creations LLoving the contrast of coppers and golds against black, Deeanna created her mantel by using green and white bottle brush trees of varying sizes and heights that she had on hand, along with a few she bleached to give a golden hue.The tree branch above adds a unique sense of movement and tiny bells strung with twine are a sweet touch. Deeanna created garlands using star ornaments and gold craft bells hung on twine and added cozy cable-knit sweater stockings and a wooden rocking horse with ticking striped ribbon for a bit of nostalgia. Greenery, candles and twinkle lights top off the magic. 30 Holiday Décor | 2022

Neutral VINTAGE PIECES MIXED WITH A MODERN SENSIBILITY PROVE THAT MAGICAL TOUCHES OF MUSTARD CREATE A UNIQUE HOLIDAY STYLE SCAPE CHRISTMAS WRITTEN BY Autumn Krause PHOTOGRAPHED BY Emma Highfill Decor 44 HOLIDAYdécor | 2022

All that Glitters is Gold. Caroline’s Christmas tree is glorious and gilded. Her rst step is to hang the large ornaments and ll the spots near the trunk of the tree. Then she adds strands of beaded garland. The next step is medium ornaments and ribbon. She says,“ nally, I step back and get a good look and add small ornaments that are only about an inch in size. They are great for lling in bare spots.” HOLIDAYdécor | 2022 45

Modern transitional living gets a holiday spin at Caroline Bivens’s home. The content creator lives in Auburn, Kansas, and has a full house consisting of her husband, four children, a dog, a cat and a full heart, as seen in the skillful and joyful expression of her design throughout their home. Originally, her style was 100% modern farmhouse, but just as her house has evolved over the years, so has she. “Currently, I’ve gone with more of a simplistic look and keep my focus on pieces that really inspire me,” she says. “One thing that connects all my aesthetics is that I always have vintage finds mixed into my décor right alongside new items.” She has no formal training and is driven by an innate love to create beautiful spaces that not only make you feel good but make you feel completely at home. By Design. Though she may not have a degree from a fancy design school, she has two vital attributes for any interior artist: moxie and vision. For example, one of the biggest DIYs that she singlehandedly tackled was a stair banister project. “It was such an accomplishment, and I did it all by myself,” she says. “I won’t say I wasn’t completely terrified when I removed the old railing…I was so afraid I was going to fall, so I basically just crawled the whole way across as I worked.” Just as she does for her home year around, Caroline, who is daring in her designs and their execution, creates holiday interiors that work beautifully with her neutral home. TOP RIGHT • Rock On. Modern rocking chairs were chosen for their simple and clean lines, and they are contrasted by the organic shape of a stag head from Arhaus.“This guy is so unique and would look great anywhere, but I love the look of him on the porch,” Caroline says. RIGHT • Gorgeous Garland. Greenery frames the doors and is attached with Velcro command hooks, which are easy to move without messing up the paint. Junie, the dog, oversees all decorating. 46 HOLIDAYdécor | 2022

Window Dressings. Luckily, the front of the home has a good hangover so when intense weather descends, there’s protection for the décor. “But I am cautious and will bring things inside if it gets too crazy,” Caroline says. HOLIDAYdécor | 2022 47

48 HOLIDAYdécor | 2022 Hung with Care. Stockings from Arhaus are embellished with faux fur.Their cozy texture matches the faux fur blankets. Caroline enjoys the decadent aesthetic of faux fur and how it calls to mind banks of freshly fallen snow!

For the Love of Christmas. Hands down, Christmas is Caroline’s favorite holiday. “If I could, I would celebrate it all year around.” As it is, she settles for getting an early start to the process of turning her home into a holiday haven, beginning in October. “It does take me quite a while to decorate, and I try to be done before Thanksgiving, so I can enjoy the décor for the whole month of December.” HOLIDAYdécor | 2022 49 TOP LEFT • Mirror Image. “This wall needed art or a mirror,”Caroline says. She chose a mirror because the re ection gives the room more depth and gives a clear sightline all the way into the kitchen. It’s a great way to easily add interest to an area, while also making a room appear bigger. TOP RIGHT • Process of Success. While she decorates,Caroline has a crackling re going while Hallmark Christmas movies play in the background. It’s a time to lose herself in the process of beautifying her home and is one she looks forward to every year. RIGHT • Clear as a Bell. These bells are from Weathered Wood Home in Kansas.“My friend just opened up her shop and when I went to visit, I fell in love with these bells. I even added them to the wreaths on my front doors,” Caroline says. The hand stitched pillow in this image is also from a small shop called Nest of Petals.
